If you have ever tackled interior or exterior painting on your own, you know that it isn’t something you want to repeat anytime soon. So, when it comes time to change a room’s décor or freshen some faded paint, you’ll be turning to painting contractors to save you the time, effort, and frustration. Hiring a professional has its own challenges, but you won’t be dissatisfied with the process or the result if you take the time to properly choose the professional that you’ll use. Here are a few tips for choosing and working with painting contractors.
- Communication- Even the best painting contractors cannot meet your expectations if you are not specific about what you want and communicate that to them effectively. Be sure to discuss all aspects of the project prior before they give you an estimate and be open to feedback they might provide as their experience can prove to be an invaluable resource.
- Understand the Estimate- Be sure you understand what is included in the estimate and what might not be. One thing that nearly all painting contractors will tell you is that there can be unexpected costs that arise during a project. Be sure you understand who will be covering those costs – you or the contractor. This is important because a very low bid and a more reasonable one can end up costing you the same because one covers them and the other doesn’t.
- Be Suspicious of a Low Bid- Remember the adage, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t true.” A seriously low bid is cause for caution. It can be an inexperienced painter, one that cuts corners on materials or hires inexperienced workers, or isn’t licensed and insured. Another red flag is if they also ask for a sizeable deposit or even being paid upfront. Don’t do it!
